NE-CAT Robot Automounter Equipment List

Equipment Required

  1. Puck Set and Tools
  2. Specially Sized Bases
  3. Pins

Puck Set / Tools

Both ALS-Style Pucks and Uni-Pucks can be used in the NE-CAT Robot Automounter. ALS-Style Pucks are preferred. Uni-Pucks are allowed but result in higher sample loss. The increased magnetic surface inherent in Uni-Pucks results in an increased inability to properly separate sample from the magnetic base. This causes puck movement and failure of samples to be returned to the puck.

Puck Shipping Kit

NE-CAT has ALS-Style Pucks and Tools available for loan on-site and a limited number of pucks can also be shipped to users. Please read our Puck Loan Policy if you are interested in borrowing pucks. To have pucks shipped to you for sample loading at home, contact Surajit Banerjee. You may also contact an NE-CAT Staff Scientist to discuss using our pucks and tools.

Bases

Good Bases

Bases are ordered from left to right based on their ability to couple with our mini-Kappa goniometer. All bases can be used the sample automounters on the C and E beamlines, but the bases on the left side of the image work the best with the mini-Kappa goniometer. We discourage the use of any bases with copper stems in conjunction with our mini-Kappa goniometer.

Bad Bases

CrystalCap Magnetic ALS and CrystalCap HT are the preferred bases for use with the Robot. CrystalCap Copper ALS HT, MAR SPINE, Molecular Dimensions SPINE, MiTeGen B1A, B3A, B3S and SPINE pins will work with the 24-ID-E Robot but are not currently recommended for the mini-Kappa goniometer. Only CrystalCap Magnetic ALS and CrystalCap HT bases are recommended for use with the 24-ID-C Robot when the mini-Kappa goniometer is installed.

Yale pins and non-magnetic screw cap bases will not work with the Robot. CrystalCap Copper Magnetic and the original CrystalCap Magnetic Bases (such as the ones used with SSRL-style robots) do not work with the NE-CAT Automounter. Original CrystalCap magnetic bases feature a flat ledge. Collison between the ledge and the gripper prevents the gripper from grabbing the base, resulting in a failure to dis-mount the sample.

Ordering Information

Bases can be obtained from Hampton Research.

Pins

All pins for the NE-CAT Automounter must be 18mm in length. Copper pins are not allowed. Make sure that none of your pins are bent. Bent pins cause the robot to jam. You may use Hampton pins and loops, LithoLoops from Molecular Dimensions Ltd. or MicroMounts from MITeGen.

18mm corresponds to breaking off the two end segments of a Hampton pin.

LithoLoops
can be purchased pre-mounted on an 18mm pin. We recommend LithoLoops because they are less-likely to sway in the LN2 dewar during autofill and will minimize sample loss.

MicroMounts
come pre-mounted on steel pins.

The image below details the assembled ALS-style base+pin ("18 mm") which is the preferred design for the Robot. The dimensions are fairly critical here, and the most important one from the Robot's standpoint is the distance from the inside mounting surface (which corresponds with the top of the goniometer magnetic mount) to the center of the crystal = 20.3mm ± 1mm.
